The Pelvic Path Origin Story- Part 2
In my last blog post, I discussed my evolution from a traditional Orthopedic PT to one that treats the Pelvic Floor. In this one I’ll answer another question I get a lot: “Why did you decide to open your own clinic?”
After working in other PT clinics and hospitals for decades, I was experiencing my share of frustrations, even burnout. I wasn’t providing the care that was in my heart to provide. And I know my clients felt that too. I started to hash out what it was that was missing, and the values that would drive a clinic I would create. And so, here are the values that drive our mission here at Pelvic Path:
Time: PT’s simply provide the best care when we have time- an hour- for every session. That allows us to really be present, listen, ask questions, and ultimately provide the highest quality of care to get greater outcomes.
Thoroughness: With time came the ability to be thorough in our evaluation and treatment. Our PT’s craft a plan on the evaluation that identifies root cause issues with a degree of thoroughness and attention to detail that was not possible in other environments I had worked in before.
Healing Space: I was done with the fast pace of busy clinics and hospitals. I knew that when I was hurried, the client felt it too. I created a space that is warm, open, peaceful and faces a quiet courtyard.
Whole Body Assessment: All of the parts are always connected, and the pelvic floor exists within this system. The emotions and stress levels were often drivers of issues in the body as well. So, I needed to work in an environment where I could be free to treat the whole body.
Access to Care: Often times, clients suffered with issues for longer than necessary, because of long wait times to be seen by a Physical Therapist. When seen, they were often not seen again for weeks. We have enough staff that we can get our clients in quickly, and offer them the follow up care they need as well to reach their goals.
Dedication: I yearned for ongoing mentorship and constant learning and collaboration, to continue to grow as a clinician. This included being in a role of both teacher and student. And so, I grew my clinic staff. At the time of this writing, I am joined by 3 other Doctors of Physical Therapy. We meet weekly to discuss cases, practice techniques, and collaborate on how to improve our skills and knowledge. We are truly stronger together, and provide better outcomes because of our mutual support of one another.
Our Mission at Pelvic Path is to help 10.000 members of our community get back to the activities they love without pain, pressure, or leakage- and without over-reliance on pain medication or surgery. At the time of this writing, we are a dedicated team of 4 Physical Therapists, 2 support staff, and we are on our way to meeting our goal!
